space utilization on a pallet

Postby Ash1 » Tue Mar 03, 2015 4:56 pm

Hey Guys,
Looking for an optimum pallet configuration on an 1165x1165 pallet. Any idea on what could be an ideal standard in terms of percentage pallet utilization. Someone suggested it to be 98% but that seemed way too high and left the room for cartons to be popping out of the pallet at times.

98% might be possible in ideal scenario, but I think about 90 % utilization is pretty good.

During pallet optimization studies, usually the oppotunity areas are..

Loading patterns not always optimal
Height utilization insufficient
Different box orientations

By optimising the following, you may improve pallet utilization.

• Improving loading patterns

• Improving height utilisation
1. Identical layers
2. Given orientation
3. Optimized orientation
4. Different layer on top
5. Free combination of layers

• Utilisation of overhang
1. Horizontal overhang
2. Vertical overhang

You may reap substantial benefits in this by including your operations and marketng team, machine experts (Palletiser Programmer, material handling specilaists), may be outside consultant.

All the very best!
