Cost pressures and environmental concerns are pushing most of the companies to innovate and go ahead with the new, improved and cheaper materials and packaging solutions. For primary packaging, there has been tremendous improvements in flexible film materials, light weight PET bottles, widespread blow fill cap solutions within food and beverage industry and things have changed quite a lot in last 10 years or so.
In secondary packaging the changes haven't been as progressive as in primary packaging. We are still struggling to save costs by using sub-optimum board or by using recycled corrugated board, by varying flute types or by playing with paper quality and glue etc. Why is that the focus on secondary packaging is not as much as it is on the primary packaging? Is there any new material coming to replace the corrugated board / paper based secondary packaging material?
