Packaging has made the industrialization possible for many sectors. Packaging has become such an important part of our life that it is extremely difficult to think about modern life without packaging.

Packaging can be defined as "the science, art and technology of encompassing products for distribution, storage, sale, protection, convenience and use". Packaging also refers to "the process of design, operation, evaluation, and production of packages".

Packaging can be classified basis the contact with the product or basis the purpose it is going to serve.

Primary packaging is the material that first contains the product. This is usually the package which is in direct contact with the contents. For example, this could be a bottle or carton for liquids; or a packet for various snack foods.

Secondary packaging is outside the primary packaging, used to group primary packages together. For example, this could be a tray and shrink film. Secondary packaging is mainly used as a means of transporting the primary packs or product from producer to retailer. This is usually removed and recycled once the pack has reached its destination. Secondary packaging can also be retained to enable the product to be purchased in bulk.

Tertiary packaging is used for shipping, bulk handling and warehouse storage, and is not commonly displayed on the retail shelf. Pallets used to transport products are considered tertiary packaging. In addition, stretch wrappers used to unitize pallet loads for easier, more stable transport are also a type of tertiary packaging.

 

The choice of packaging machinery for primary, secondary and tertiary packaging can depend on various situations. These can include available budget, payback period, integration, associated running costs, machine technology and available floor space.

VFFS- Vertical Form Fill Seal Machines

"The Vertical form fill sealing machine (VFFS) machine forms the plastic bags out of a flat roll of plastic film, at the same time filling the bags with product and sealing the filled bags. Both solids and liquids can be bagged using this packaging system.

HFFS- Horizontal Form Fill Seal Machines

The Horizontal form fill sealing machine (HFFS) machine forms the plastic bags out of a flat roll of plastic film, at the same time filling the bags with product and sealing the filled bags. The flow of the product and film is horizontal in case of HFFS machine and the film is formed around the product. HFFS machines are usually continuous motion and are commonly known as flow wrappers.

HFFS machines are required for the products where product orientation, stacking OR breakage is critical. These machines can be distinguished basis operational performance, technology used OR basis the type of the final product.
